Implementing Adobe Acrobat In PageMill 3

To use Acrobat files in PageMill, you should have a copy of the Acrobat plug-in (or the ActiveX Control) installed in PageMill's Browser Plug-ins folder. The Windows Acrobat plug-in is named Nppdf32.dll. The Macintosh Acrobat plug-in is named PDFViewer.

You can implement Adobe Acrobat PDF files in PageMill in three different ways:

  • Linked--Use this method when you want the PDF file to download as a file. Files downloaded using this method can also be automatically viewed in the external Acrobat Reader, if the browser is set up to use the Reader as a helper application. This method provides the lowest common denominator and is the safest bet for compatibility.
  • Embedded--Use this method when you want to display a thumbnail version of the PDF file in a Web page. The browser must be configured with Acrobat.
  • Embedded with ActiveX--Use this method when you want an Acrobat file to display inside PageMill with the Acrobat ActiveX Reader controls. This method is slick but should be used only when you know that your audience will have the Acrobat ActiveX control installed in their browsers, such as in a controlled intranet setting.

Adobe Acrobat files have a .pdf extension. Begin by moving the Acrobat file into your Web site's root folder.

Linking A PDF File

To link the Acrobat file in the Web page, select Insert|Object|Acrobat File. In the Insert Object dialog box, select the Acrobat file and click on Link To. The name will appear as linked text on the page. Change the linked text as you see fit.

You can also drag and drop to link the PDF file to a graphic or range of text. Select the graphic or text, hold down the Alt key, and then drag the PDF file onto the selection.

Embedding A PDF Thumbnail

To embed the Acrobat file into the Web page, select Insert|Object|Acrobat File. In the Insert Object dialog box, select the Acrobat file and click on Place. The Acrobat Reader will launch (if it's not already running), and a thumbnail preview of the PDF file will appear in PageMill. With the thumbnail selected, you'll need to tweak the Inspector's Object tab. Enter "HREF" in the Name column and the PDF file name in the Value column.

Embedding A PDF File With ActiveX

To embed the Acrobat file into the Web page with ActiveX, select Insert|Object|ActiveX|Select File. In the Insert ActiveX dialog box, select the Acrobat file and click on Insert. The PDF file will appear in PageMill, complete with the Acrobat ActiveX controls. Use the Inspector's Object tab to change the height and width settings.

Check The Help File!

PageMill 3's Help file contains an extensive section on using Acrobat files.
